Automata was founded on the principle that humanity is at its best when thinking. That means freeing humanity from the tyranny of repetitive, mundane jobs.
Today Automata is building a world-class company to disrupt the life science industry with our new core product that automates life science workflows across diagnostic, drug discovery and synthetic biology labs. Our mission is to empower scientists with accessible lab automation tools that are fast, flexible, and cost-efficient.
To help us on our mission we are looking for a motivated, proactive, hands-on, quick-learning mechanical engineer with experience in industrial automation or a similar industry.
About the role
This role sits within the Customer Success Team and will be an essential bridge between the Pre-Sales Application Engineering Team and our Deployment Application Engineers as you will be taking Pilot Solutions or Proof Of Concepts and making them production ready. This means that as well as completing mechanical designs you will be continuously collaborating with our Sales and Manufacturing teams, making sure we have clearly captured all build requirements and that we have supporting documentation to ensure high quality, regulatory compliant, finished products for our customers.
What will you be doing?
Taking customer requests from concepts and POCs to fully working Production models (i.e. high-level design from Sales/Pre-Sales Application Engineers to Low-Level Design)
Leading multiskilled engineering teams to deliver applications projects within the production team and collaborating with your peers as an SME on other production projects
Producing high-quality mechanical designs (e.g. 3D CAD, detailed drawings, general assemblies, bill of materials)
Ensuring configuration control is implemented and maintained for any mechanical designs
Specifying and selecting appropriate mechanical components and materials
Aiding test engineers in the production of test plans related to mechanical system
Working closely with mechanical subcontractors to deliver hardware required for the project (e.g. sheet metal, CNC parts, mechanical assemblies)
Travelling to customer sites as needed to support other teams with your subject matter expertise, either in a pre-sales or post-sales capacity
Assisting in customer calls as an SME as required
To be considered for this role you must:
Have an Engineering Degree (preferably mechanical) or equivalent experience
Be comfortable talking communicating with internal and external stakeholders about high-level concepts and low-level detail
Have significant experience in mechanical CAD (SolidWorks preferred, but not essential)
Familiarity with designing for a range of manufacturing techniques (e.g. sheet metal, CNC, turned parts, welding)
Have experience or show an aptitude for technical leadership of diverse engineering teams
Have good document writing skills
Good working knowledge of the relevant materials and drawing standards
Broad understanding of other engineering disciplines (electrical, software, controls)
Be confident in all the steps of MAIT (Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration and Testing)
Desired:
Previous experience designing mechanical parts or assemblies for machinery (e.g. robotics, actuators, machine frames)
Hands-on attitude: workshop familiarity, laboratory experience.
Python programming experience
